How Much Bacteriostatic Water Should You Add?
A question with no single correct answer, but a very clear tradeoff. The water volume does not change what is in the vial — it changes how easy that vial is to measure accurately.
The short answer
There is no universally correct volume, and any source giving you one without knowing your vial is guessing. What the water volume controls is concentration — and therefore how large, and how readable, each draw is. More water means bigger draws on the syringe. Less water means smaller ones.
The amount in the vial never changes
This is the part that trips people up. A 5 mg vial contains 5 mg whether you add 1 mL of water or 5 mL. Water is a solvent, not an ingredient. You are not diluting the total — you are spreading it across more or less liquid.
What changes is how much sits in any given volume:

The actual tradeoff
More water: easier to read, harder to fit
Spreading the same amount across more liquid pushes each measurement onto a larger part of the syringe. A draw at 20 units is far more forgiving than one at 4 — misreading by half a unit is a 2.5% error at 20 units and a 12.5% error at 4.
The limit is capacity. Past a point the draw exceeds the barrel, and you are either splitting it or reaching for a bigger syringe.
Less water: compact, but unforgiving
A concentrated vial makes small draws. That is fine when the numbers land comfortably, and a problem when they land at 2 or 3 units, where the graduation marks are coarse relative to what you are measuring.
The vial is a hard ceiling
Whatever the arithmetic says, the water has to physically fit. Many peptide vials are 2–3 mL total, so "just add 5 mL" is not always an option regardless of what the concentration math prefers.
A practical way to think about it
Rather than picking a water volume first, work backwards from the draw you want to be reading. If a measurement lands somewhere between roughly 10 and 40 units, it is easy to read and comfortably inside a standard barrel. Run your target amount through the reconstitution calculator at a couple of different water volumes and see which one puts you in that range.

Record it or repeat it
Whatever volume you choose becomes part of that vial's identity. Every unit count you calculate afterwards depends on it, and a unit count without its mixing volume cannot be checked or reproduced. Write it down with the vial — three weeks later, "probably 2 mL" is not something you want to build arithmetic on.
